March 2014 Volume 1 No. 3

CEO’s CORNER (Joni Girardi, DataSelf CEO)

A warm welcome to our new readers! Having been at the head of DataSelf for now over 9 years, it was with a great sense of accomplishment we closed 2013, perhaps the most transformational year in our history. In the past couple of years, we restructured the business and invested heavily in the next generation of our business intelligence, in-memory analytics and ultralight data warehousing packages. Complementing these efforts is our partnership with Microsoft BI and Tableau, which is proving to be very successful! A solid foundation has now been set, and is augmented with the seasoned core team now in place. In 2014, we’re going to expand our business even more rapidly, taking advantage of our platform’s maturity, a customer-centric, more “about them” sales approach, and lastly, maximizing our channel sales efforts through joint marketing initiatives, improved sales training and support.

On Feb 25th, DataSelf sponsored a panel on DSA channel sales at TPAC 2014, held at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.

The panel was very well received due to the lively discussion between panelists and the audience. Channel sales strategies, customer behaviors and expectations along with creating the perception of a trusted advisor, were just some of the broad range of topics discussed. Learn more.

TPAC is the Third Party Advantage Conference that showcases third party products that work with Sage 300 ERP (Accpac) and Sage CRM.

PRODUCT-RELATED NEWS (Jeff Wasel PhD, Products & Services Strategy)

If you didn’t receive Dec-Jan’s issue of the SMB, you missed 3 important product announcements. The end of 2013 included several exciting product-related events, such as the release of  DataSelf Analytics 8.1.1., and DataSelf ETL 2103.4. We also announced the roll-out of a very well-received replacement plan for ProClarity users, given that Microsoft will only be supporting ProClarity until July 2017.

TIPS AND TECHNIQUES TALK

One of the many cool new features in DataSelf 8.1.1, is the inclusion of folders for the Data Panel, something we’ve been asking for as a result of our experience at client sites. You can now create folders to help organize everything on the data panel, such as field names, measures, dimensions, KPI’s, etc. Folders will help you organize those huge lists of DSA’s pre-configured KPIs and reports, as well as what you create. Learn more.

MIT’s new algorithm could solve thorny optimization problems

It’s a classic computer science algorithmic dilemma: what’s the shortest path between two distinct objects, a quandary today described as an optimization problem. This problem is typically solved using one of a number of maximum-flow algorithms, often shortened as “max-flow.” In a recent Computerworld.com article, mathematicians from MIT introduced a formula that reduces the calculation time required to determine the best path through a network. The algorithm’s efficiency derives from behaving in a “near-linear” fashion, according to Jonathan Kelner, an associate professor of applied mathematics at MIT who co-authored the new algorithm.”The running times for previously known algorithms scaled substantially worse than linearly.” Such behavior could significantly cut development time on program code, allowing computers to efficiently tackle complex problems.
